Accessibility
We have endeavoured to remove barriers to this website so that people with disabilities can access information and use the website as easily as possible, with all the functionality that should be expected by us all. We have designed:
- ‘skip over repeated elements’ such as navigation menus and logos
- put text equivalents for graphics, including using the <longdesc> attribute that some browsers can use which link to pages that describe images
- made links descriptive and make sense
- ensured that there is sufficient colour contrast between the text and background and that colour alone is not used to convey information
- our site has been designed with style sheets to allow maximum flexibility. Our enhancements list includes providing different style sheets for your use
- header tags have been effectively added to this site to help clarity of the website as well as other techniques to assist accessibility
Text Size
If you'd prefer the font size to be larger or smaller, then you can easily alter this using your browser. We hope to offer an alternative stylesheet that will achieve this without using the following techniques.
Internet Explorer
To increase or decrease the text size in Internet Explorer, follow these simple instructions:
- Click on the ‘View’ menu in your browser
- Click on the ‘Text size’ option
- Select the size you would like to see
Firefox (MAC and PC)
To increase or decrease the text size in Firefox, follow these simple instructions:
- Click on the ‘View’ menu in your browser
- Click on the ‘Text size’ option
- Increase or decrease the size you would like to see
- Windows™ PC keyboard shortcuts are; control key and the + key to increase the font size and control key and the - key to decrease the font size.
- Apple™ MAC keyboard shortcuts are; apple key and the + key to increase the font size and apple key and the - key to decrease the font size.
Netscape Navigator
To increase or decrease the text size in Netscape Navigator, follow these simple instructions:
- Click on the ‘View’ menu in your browser
- Click on the ‘Increase Font’ or ‘Decrease Font’ options
External Links
Most of the external links on our site will load in a new browser window. Any external link will be clearly denoted by wording such as ‘(Please note: this link will open a new window)’.
Skip Links
If you are using an audio browser (screen reader software) there are links that allow you to skip over the following different sections of a page:
- Skip to live info: ‘skip to live info’. This will skip past our logo and take you to the live info section.
- Skip to main navigation: ‘skip to main navigation’. This will allow you to skip past the FreeCoursework.info logo and live info section and go straight to the main navigation section.
- Skip to login: ‘skip to user login’: This will skip directly to the login section where you can login, register or be reminded of your password
- Skip to registered user menu: ‘skip to user & search menus’. This will skip to the logged in user and search menus
- Skip to main content: ‘skip to main content area’. This will allow you to skip past the FreeCoursework.info logo, live info section and the main navigation sections and you will be taken straight to the main content section of a page
- Skip navigation footer: ‘skip footer of navigation links’. This will allow you to skip past the navigation section at the bottom of a page
- Skip footer of web standards validations: ‘skip footer of international web standards validations’. This will allow you to skip past the web standards validation section. This shows our efforts at being compliant with various web standards.
International Standards we have met
Here is a list of the standards that we have met on certain pages. As the site develops we expect to achieve all of these standards on all of our pages.

This validation shows that we have taken the care to create an interoperable web page and that it complies to international standards of XHTML 1.0 Strict (one of the latest programming languages behind the web)
The web page meets Cascading Style Sheet level 2 (CSS2) standards, the language that should be used for the presentation and styling of a website
The web page is viewed accurately on a text only browser - we use Lynx.
Testing
The website has been tested to the best of our abilities.
- To ensure compliance to the international standards listed above, thereby guaranteeing that different browsers will render the web page as intended and that assistive technology (which is designed considering these standards) works well
- With a a text only browser, we used Lynx
- Different screen resolutions
- Different platforms - MAC and PC
- Different Browsers - Firefox(on MAC and PC) and Internet Explorer 6
- Without images - a text equivalent is displayed
- With Javascript turned off - it still works, the content is available and makes sense. Note - external links will not open a new browser if Javascript is turned off! This is a limitation of current browsers using XHMTL V1.0 Strict.
- Without Cascading Style Sheets - it still works, the content is available and makes sense
