reasons for building the LHC with the expense being the major con (concerns over the Earth being devoured are at best extremely unlikely theoretical scenarios more requiring perhaps more in depth safety reviews before it is put in operation ‘just in case’). Whether you think it is worth it is mainly a matter of whether you believe that discovering the secrets of our Universe is something worth spending a large amount of money on.
In my opinion the potential for new discoveries about the fundamental nature of the Universe as well as the likelihood of important new technologies being developed as a result of the project make it well worth the money, especially as the finances are pooled jointly between a large number of wealthy nations allowing both the cost and the benefits to be distributed between them.
