Individual Research Essay – Writing a First Class Essay e.g. "find out about the company called tateandlyle"
The following reflect the marking criteria tutors actually use to assess individual research essays.
A first class essay will have the following attributes:
Style (weighting approximately 25%)
Clear introduction stating the scope of the essay, with sensible justification for limiting the scope, and a brief section on methodology/approach
Very well-written using formal language and formal essay style with proper and thorough referencing
Logical structure; the argument should progress naturally from point to point
Concise conclusion reflecting the analysis and referring back to the introduction
Descriptions limited to essential/relevant information
If charts/tables are used they must be properly labelled
Following instructions for submission published in the handbook.
Content (weighting approximately 75%)
Evidence of broad research (insufficient information/lack of information about the company must be evaluated i.e. some discussion of how this reflects on the company’s commitment to CSR and/or ethical business practice)
Show an understanding of ethical practice and/or CSR by focusing on company activities beyond the legal requirements
Evidence of thoughtful consideration of a variety of aspects/factors – such as, type of industry, size of company, societal/social pressures, external business environment…
Specific identification of key/primary stakeholders and their specific importance to the company (preferably through stakeholder mapping and some justification)
Some evaluation of company literature related to CSR/ethical business practice, etc. For instance, objectives compared to measured/reported results (perhaps in newspaper articles)
Some analysis of research findings (particularly how the company literature reveals which stakeholders are important to the company and what it offers them) and the stated objectives of the company compared to its reputation in media, public perception, etc.
Good use of examples to illustrate points/relate to literature
No irrelevant information; no waffle, no padding
General
Reasonably close to the word count (if it appears to be too short or too long it probably is!)
No errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling (this could decide marginal cases)
