Our drama was based on the court hearing of Derek Bentley’s judgement. As we all know his punishment was inequitable, therefore we had to make the audience, feel shocked and sympathetic. As the drama started with Derek being sentenced, we had to inform the audience of Derek’s past leading up to that point, to show this we used the drama technique “flashbacks”. We used one flashback for each family member, and each had his or her own trigger line. The scene started with a voice saying “And the verdict is “. Here there is a slight pause to increase suspense. To show Derek’s significance, and induce sympathy we had Derek onstage throughout the Drama. When he was not involved in a flashback, he looked down at the floor, and had saddened facial expressions. This made him look subdued and unapproachable, showing his feelings. This contrasted with the happy memories in forthcoming flashbacks. Derek addressed the audience by saying “I’m not afraid to die I have not done anything wrong”. He used a low solemn tone of voice, to show he was broken down and really didn’t believe what he was saying. His simplistic comments furthermore induced empathy and compassion from the audience. After saying his line, his body language changed adequately, and was poised at a dormant state with his head facing towards the floor again.
As mentioned above, each family member had “trigger lines”. Before each flashback, that particular family member said these trigger lines, out loud. The trigger line from Derek’s mum “ my baby boy, hung for no reason”. This conveyed, that even though he was older, he still was a weak and vulnerable person, and to her was still he baby boy, and that the accusations put across to Derek, he simply just wasn’t capable of doing them. Derek’s father’s trigger line; “I tried to keep him on the straight and narrow, I guess I failed”. Here we see the blame is shifted off Derek’s shoulders, as his father now blames himself for what has happened. He tried is uttermost best for Derek, but sadly it wasn’t enough. His sister’s line, also shows that she feels responsible for Derek’s actions; “I always felt like I had to look after Derek, we were so close”. From these trigger lines the audience begin to see an insight into Derek’s relationship with each and every family member.
