In the first flashback it is a Christmas, usually a happy time for all people, we deliberately chose to use this scene, as Derek was not able to spend this years Christmas with his family. This flashback was focused on the relationship between Derek and his mother. The characters sat in a semi-circle to show we were around the Christmas tree. Throughout the scene, all the characters laughed and joked as young Derek opened his presents to show a typical happy family scene. The scene finishes with the family laughing and joking to themselves. They all walk off stage and past Derek this adjusts Derek’s laughter into sorrow, as he finds himself left on stage by himself again, ready to be sentenced as in the first scene. The shifting moods of atmosphere in both scenes plays on the audiences minds, bringing their “happiness” levels back down to zero where they begun.
