The opening period of silence is broken by a knock at the door. We used the silence to build tension within the audience. Sophie who plays the mother, answers the door. After a brief conversation with the caller, she comes back on scene. Her bewildered face shows she is shocked but yet puzzled. Her prolonged silence increases suspense within the audience.
In the final scene, his parents are almost out of time. It’s the day of the sour execution of Derek. Suspense undoubtedly fills the minds of the anticipating audience. Derek’s father has taken his son’s case to the House of Lords, and is awaiting the life or death answer. In this scene Derek’s father is alone on centre stage, pacing up and down furiously.
