Here tension is added as a new character, the father, is added into the drama; his role is not played by anyone in the drama, but is of great significance to the play. This is really clever as they have created tension by just mentioning an imaginative character. Here we find out reasons for why the father left when Ben was born, he was also a motive for the letter.
They skilfully used the drama techniques of flashbacks. When Ben was acting in the present we portrayed him as a mature figure, whereas Sanjay played him as childlike and immature in the flashbacks. This is good as the audience are able to distinguish time gaps just with the flashback. The end of the play finished with Ben murdering his own mother. Sanjay is left on the stage; he is bent over with his hands in his head, with Ben behind him. This was really effective as it illustrated that the child (Sanjay) in Ben had also died. During the play they did a still image of Ben being looked down upon by Hannah and Chloe, this showed that they were disgusted with his actions and also looking down on him showed that he was on a lower level to them both due to what he had done. This symbolized how his friends all began to hate him. This was another sign of the motives for the letter. One thing that set the drama apart from others was that instead of the letter being read out during the play, it was narrated. Ben was not seen after the first scene but his voice narrated the drama from then onwards, by doing this it showed to the audience a vast representation of Ben’s life. Even though Ben was not on stage, his emotions and feelings were still shown through his tone of voice which altered at certain points within the play. The audience soon become aware that Ben was mentally disturbed, however the price of taking a life in the drama, was Capital Punishment. This tied in with the theme of Capital Punishment and created tension as Ben killed his mother not out of self will but because he was emotionally disturbed. Should capital Punishment stand in this situation? The drama ended sharply and the audience are left to imagine and guess what might have happened according with Ben’s actions.
