Page Number: 9 of 11 pages: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11opening scene Ben’s body language is tense and hesitant, it seemed that he had to think about what he was doing, the audience get the impression that the letter is troubling him as he keeps on looking at it with great concentration, as though he feared it. He doesn’t say anything until he comes to the end of the letter, where he says out allowed “Im didn’t mean to do it” The audience get a slight edgy feeling that the letter is bad, as his tone of voice is upset and fearful. Ben does not look up, and purposely shields his face from the audience, giving them the impression that he maybe ashamed of what he had wrote in the letter.
Social/Historical/Cultural Evaluation
In the 1800’s capital punishment was a very common thing around the world. In recent times capital punishment has been abolished in most countries. However some countries still use capital punishment due to the fact that
There are indeed positive reasons for using it as well as negative reasons.
Some of the points for capital punishment are;
o Sets an example and deters other criminals – By people being able to see the result of being caught for a crime and the punishment that follows it, other criminals or people thinking of committing the same crime will be deterred as they will not want to suffer that same fate.
o It saves the tax payers money as don’t need to imprison them for long amounts of time for which the tax payers pay for the expenses
o Public Safety – The public would not feel safe with these criminals walking amongst them. They should not only be imprisoned where they will leave after a certain amount of years and its been shown that many criminals re-offend but instead capital punishment gets they out of our lives and reinforces public safety
Some of the points against corporate punishment are;
o Inhumane – The methods of capital punishment could even be seen as a violation of human rights as they are outdated and barbaric. The person being punished must suffer an extreme amount of pain until death
o Chance of innocence – The Derek Bentley case is a good example of this, an innocent man killed. With capital punishment even if it turns out a person is innocent they cannot be released since they are put to death
o Should have a chance of correction/rehabilitation – The prison system is there in the hope that
