GCSE UNIT1: The Impact of War

Aim: For pupils to use stimuli in order to understand how war affects a cross section of individuals from various cultures and work for a period of 6 hours exploring drama conventions and realizing various dramatic outcomes..

First Hour

1. Distribute the war photographs and allow 15 minutes for discussion about the dramatic possibilities. Ideas should be written on an A3 piece of paper in the form of a character plan.
2. Choose one of the photographs and characters to form a tableau which represents the content of the photograph. If there are any extra characters necessary they must be in keeping with the photograph. Know your exact thoughts and have reasons for them at the point of the tableau. If your character is dead, you will be required to convey your thoughts moments before the death.(5 minutes preparation)
3. Show the Tableau (30 seconds freeze)
4. Thought Track (1 minute )
5. Discuss and evaluate the work you have just done, paying attention to what you and others in the group could improve. Speak freely but make sure all are heard. Repeat the exercise with improvements (3 1/2 minutes)
6. Discuss the possibilities of what happened exactly 1 minute before the photograph was taken. If you were dead for a long time before, you will be required to speak in ghostly form, looking back at what happened. Improvise the scene leading up to the photograph and freeze when appropriate. It should last no longer than 1 minute. If the dead come alive to speak in narrative/monologue, the other characters should use a form which does not distract. (15 minutes preparation)
7. Act out the improvisation (1 minute)
8. Discuss and evaluate your work and take notes. These notes will be used in your portfolio. (10 minutes)
