I always loved going to the beach: the pretty golden sand sprinkled with pearly pink shells and the steaming bag of fish and chips afterwards was beautiful in the simplest of ways. The whole way there I would bounce excitedly on the car seat, bombarding my parents with “Are we there yet?”s for the whole journey, but giving up about five minutes before we actually were; when we did get there I would zoom out of the car and nag my mum into hurrying up and pull her sleeve, dragging her with all my might towards the coast. However, there is one time at the beach I remember all too well…
My parents had let me go off to explore. I could feel the scratchy little grains of sand squeeze through my toes as I ran in pure joy down the beach towards the clusters of rocks I knew held the treasures I sought: the tiny brown scuttling crabs and squiggly, wiggling nervous shrimps that enticed me to spend hours gazing longingly into their perfect rock pool homes that I imagined as vast cities seething with miniature sand hole and pebble homes, with a huge golden castle for The King of The Pool – the mighty crab! I could see the big blue sea, as it rolled and lapped lazily, as if it could barely find the energy, and, with the midday sun beating down on my back I was torn between the underwater cities or the sparkling water. I stood for a long while pondering this impossible choice and then, figuring there’d be little fishes and dolphins in the sea, I chose that option.
I ran full throttle as fast as my little legs could carry me into the water and squealed as the waves splashed higher and higher up my tummy, causing little goose-bumps to prickle across my arms as the cold water crept up. I played around happily for a little while but then the inevitable happened: I fell over. As I took in a nasty salty nose and mouthful and got a stinging eyeful of sea water, I instantaneously made up my mind that I didn’t want to be there anymore. I struggled tearfully up from the tugging water and fought my way through the seemingly murderous currents . As I reached the sand I spotted a small pebble and hurled it into the vicious waves
