In the film Hope and Glory as in most films it goes through many moods. Mostly this film is shot with a desaturation of colour that gives a slightly dated feeling to most of the people. The clothes, furniture and décor of many of the houses that are used in this film compliment this. The general feel on the home front is a more secure and hoping ‘our boys on the front’ are ok. This has a vast contrast with that and being on the frontline in the unbearable trenches. At the start of the film there was a definite naivety in the younger daughter’s actions when she kept riding her bike around the garden without a care in the world as on the wireless World War Two was being announced. Throughout the film this carries on when they were peeping through the keyhole at her sister and her Canadian boyfriend, there were some interesting false-truths told by Billy about his love life as well that the younger sister didn’t really believe but was still curious as to what her sister was getting up to.
There was an obvious mood of distress and horror when their house was being doused with water to mask the flames before it was incinerated The mother was distraught as to what she saw and had to be held back to be prevented entering the inferno. The camera shot used in that particular scene also gave a good idea as to how the family saw their house becoming ash.
The most contrasting mood and as a way to get away from their ruined house and the area of suburban England during the bombings with the Foghorns and Bomb scares. The establishing shot of the family being punted over the river onto Billy’s Grandfather’s house is one with a feeling of joy and relaxation. The mother is the most obviously relieved as she has had a tough time coping with her vast amounts of children and with no husband she has done well to hold it together. The backing music used in this scene is also very applicable to the moment as it gives it a sense of hope and glory hence the
