Welcome to Sarajevo is different from normal war films because you see the war through the view of the journalists. This makes you more aware how the camera is used, so you come much more involved in the film. Also this makes you appreciate how important their role is. It also makes you think “What is real, what is unreal?” and you wonder what else is on the news if this is not in it, “What could be a bigger story?.”
I think Winterbottom does this very well; making new film look authentic. In many other scenes he manages to make the film look realistic by portraying events with brutal realism such as the stopping of the bus meaning the kidnapping of orphaned children by the Serbian forces, and the sniper killing of Risto. This is why the film is so effective as it shocks the person viewing it making them think about how bad it would have been to be there. It also persuades the audience to help as Bosnia needed it very badly when the film was first made, as Bosnia was in such a bad state. I think by using those effects, the film has shocked and made me think how bad it would have been to live there when the war was happening and I also think that the film would have affected lots of people in the same way. Winterbottom made the film look so authentic by using real footage this is why it is so easy to believe that it really happened.
