Not only does Dickens make the characters memorable and striking by their perceived looks but he makes their characteristics just as striking. The main themes of ‘Great Expectations’ were class structure, social well being, wealth, ambition, self-improvement and love. Dickens has done well to fit these themes in and around the main characters which makes the characters striking and memorable in their own unique way.
In the story Dickens reveals that it was very hard to move into a different class structure in the 19th century and criminals were usually hung and left in the gallows. Both of these situations are used in the story, with Pip and his ‘Great Expectations’ and Magwitch on his getaway.
