and destined for the plate, while Nemo, Marlin and Dori are many hued against the drab and dingy fish implying that they’re different and don’t belong in the fishing grounds. Their home (the reef) is, like them, multi-coloured and interesting. The fishing net, water and everything else at the fishing grounds is dull and lacklustre reminding us that they are a long way from home. Also it’s quite dark suggesting that this is a dangerous place where fish die.
The humans are the enemies in this scene and the audience is rooting for the fish against us! To achieve this several techniques are used. The humans’ faces are rarely shown and they don’t speak so we have no sympathy for them while anthropomorphism is used to give the fish human characteristics. The fish are the “under dog” fighting back against the faceless masters so gain our support.
This scene illustrates the theme of struggle as it involves conflict between humans and the fish. Nemo is the hero using skills he learnt in the tank to save the day.
This is the film’s moral lesson as Nemo has grown up and Marlin has learnt to trust him.
During the film both Marlin and Nemo are given new names (“Sharkbait” and “Jellyman”). Many heroes have another name for their hero alter ego and this symbolises what they have become.
