alarm.’

Eddie Carbone is Catherine’s legal guardian after her mother died an we don’t know what happened to her father. From the beginning of the play we know that Eddie has feelings for Catherine, there are a few quotes that indicate this, one of them is ‘EDDIE is please and therefore shy about it.’ This shows that Eddie has feelings for Catherine that aren’t parental and he is pleased when she notices him. Another quote is ‘I could tell you things about Louis which you wouldn’t wave to him no more.’ This shows that Eddie doesn’t want her to know any other men, he is jealous of her waving to other people and doesn’t want her ever to get married, he wants her to live at home forever, with him, and although he doesn’t admit it, not even to himself, I personally believe he wants to marry her. All these things makes their relationship awkward because he really likes her while she has no idea of this and thinks of him as a father. When Rodolfo and Marco enter the house tensions rise because Catherine instantly falls in love with Rodolfo, much to Eddies dismay. Eddie takes a dislike to Rodolfo the second he realises Catherine is interested in him, we know this because it says ‘Eddie is downstage, watching as she pours a spoonful of sugar into his cup, his face puffed with trouble.’ Eddie Carbone lives in an Italian-American community, this helps build up tension because he believes that Rodolfo doesn’t show him any respect, this mainly started when Rodolfo started dating Catherine without asking Eddie permission, therefore breaking the Italian code of Honour (omerta), this causes Eddie to start hating Rodolfo even more then he did beforehand. Tension rises even more when Eddie is talking to Alfieri, his temper quickly changes, at first he thought of how of Catherine as a small girl making a mistake but by the end of this conversation he thinks that he must stop them getting together as if the world depended on it, we know this because Eddie says to Alfieri ‘I walk hungry plenty of days in this city! (it starts to break through) And now I gotta sit in my own house and look at a son-of-a-bitch punk like that.’ This causes the audience to get scared because they think Eddie is going to become suddenly violent.
