with John Proctor and will stop at nothing to be with him. The audience learn that he is what drives Abigail to go to court and make so many accusations. In act1 John Proctor calls her a “child.” Abigail angers at this and during the rest of the play everything she does is to impress John Proctor and to try and show him that she isn’t a merely just a child.

John Proctor is the tragic hero in the Crucible. He gets sucked into the hysteria of the witch trials and is eventually accused of witchcraft himself. In act 1 we are introduced to him by miller who says “, he was a kind man of powerful body.” Miller is telling the audience that he is a good person. This informs the audience that Proctor is a good man and later in the play the audience know that his actions are all with the right intentions. Miller also tells us “, he is a sinner.” At first the audience do not know what this is but when we see the scene between john and Abigail Williams the audience understand that they had an affair whilst Abigail was working in his home. Earlier in the play we found out that Abigail hates Elizabeth Proctor when she says “, goody proctor is a gossiping liar.” The audience realise that Elizabeth found out and discharged Abigail from their house. Whilst talking to John, it is made clear to the audience that Abigail wants him for herself “. Give me a word john. A soft word.” The audience now understand why Abigail hates Elizabeth Proctor so much- she is married to the man she wants for herself. We know from act 1 that Abigail is in love with John. We also realise that John, who we have been told is a good man is not in love with her. We see this when he says “, I will cut of my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again.” This is vital in preparing the audience for what is to come because we know Abigail desperately wants John for herself. She believes that if she got rid of Elizabeth Proctor, then John Proctor would become her own. Because of this Abigail accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft in act 2 and Elizabeth is arrested. The audience were prepared for this because of what happened in
