Page Number: 6 of 6 pages: 1 2 3 4 5 6He values it over the truth and his moral values because he lies about what he saw in the woods so his daughter and niece wouldn’t be accused therefore keeping his name clean. Abigail also mentions how it is important to her when she says “My name is good in the village. I will not have it said my name is spoiled.” This demonstrates to the audience that ones name will be very important in the play. In the last scene of the Crucible where John Proctor refuses to confess to witchcraft he says “I have given you my soul leave me my name.” The power of ones name is so important to him that he is prepared to give his life for it. The audience can understand why he has done this because of what Abigail and Parris said in Act 1
The audience are prepared for what happens later in the play by what has happened in Act1. All the main characters have been introduced and the audience has been given an insight to what they’re like. We also learn their opinions and personal traits which helps the audience to understand their actions and motives later in the play. The
