The two poems we have been studying are "The Charge of the Light Brigade" and "Dulcet et Decorum est." These two poems come from totally different historical periods. "The Charge of the Light Brigade" about the Crimean War which took place in the 19th century and Dulcet et Decorum est. being about the First World War which took place in 1914-18 in the 20th century. The difference between these two times is that "The Charge of the Light Brigade" , written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson was set in a time where they weren't very advanced, they mostly used weapons such as horses for defense and swords and some guns When they used horse back for the first time but that failed miserably as the horses were to much of a big target and easy to hit down killing the soldier along with it. In 1917 things had changed they now had improved tactics such as building trenches and education so their plans had improved loads so they don’t just obey orders they think for themselves and if they find that something is wrong they can change their mind and disagree with there sergeant. I am going to compare the two poems from 1853 and 1917.
The charge of the light brigade written by Alfred lord Tennyson is cleverly written to a beat, sound of horses running. He uses this rhythm to tell the reader it is a fast paced poem and to set the mood and make it sound exciting. He uses exclamation marks and speech marks to make it come alive as if you are really there, He uses words that end in D: ''Storm'd and thunder'd'' & ''was there a man dismay'd' & ''someone had blunder'd'' all making sounds of cannons, bomb shells, blowing up he uses these to make the reader picture what Tennyson went through. He uses these to make you think about all the noise and the thuds that happened through out the war, through out the poem. He also uses Sh sounds: “Storm'd with Shot and Shell'' making the reader think of gun fire, ruffling, guns firing in every direction. These sounds carry on all the way through the poem they never stop because the sounds in the war never ended till the battle was over.
Tennyson describes in his poem war is like
