He again sees reality with the way it’s meant to be seen in which war has been shown, where soldiers are seen to be pictured as singing while marching proudly to their glorious deaths. ‘‘Deaf even to the hoots'' he uses hoots as it sounds like the mad rushing of shells as they sweep through the air at great speed into the enemy lines. Owen describes what he feels about men dying by using words like: ''Gas GAS! Quick. boys!'' using capital letters and exclamation marks create a picture in the mind that describes the men to be at great risk, urgent to get there mask on with the panic and fear of the tiniest gad that may get inside there bodies if they are not quick enough with the gas mask. “Like a man in fire or lime” he says this to express the burning and blistering effect and the pain caused by the mustard gas
When it comes into contact with skin and eyes. It can be a very painful experience for the men and leads them to a slow death, burning them from the insides. He says this as one man has not got there quick enough and the gas has started to burn there insides, it is too late for him he know must feel like has insides are melting. ''As under a green sea'' his lungs have filled up of gas so he can no longer breath he describes it to be like the sea, soon as water gets into your lungs and you have started to drown there is no way you can escape just like what the gas is doing to this young man. He is drowning on the battlefield. He explains how nasty and horrid the gas would feel inside the man: ''Come gargling from froth - corrupted lungs.'' this describes how the young men’s lungs have all covered and burnt in white froth burning from the inside like spreading cancer running through has body eating at has lungs till there would be nothing left, the man would be in loads of pain! But the people around him all know that he will eventually die. ''He plunges at me, guttering, choking, and drowning” he uses the word like guttering to describe how water would sound draining down the gutter pipe referring to the sounds in the throat from the man that was
