Statistics Coursework

My hypothesis will be, “the more goals a team has scored the more points they have gained.”
I have chosen this for two reasons:
-Firstly it will enable me to stem off into two other hypothesis’.
- Secondly if my hypothesis was based on: wins, losses and draws then the outcome would be too obvious.

I have decided to collect my data for two reasons:
- Firstly I am interested in football
- Secondly I understand how football tables work, unlike the used car task.

I expect to find that generally the amount of goals scored will effect a team’s position.
e.g. the team who is top of its league will have scored more goals than anyone else.
e.g2. the team at the bottom of the table will have score less goals than anyone else.

In order to make my investigation more accurate I will compare 4 different league tables.
- Premiership
- Bundesliga
- The Championship
- Scottish premier league (SPL)

I have chosen to use 4 leagues for 2 reasons:
- Firstly it will give me more individual pieces of data.
- Secondly to make my results more accurate and comparable by using more than 1 league.

I will only use the data presented in the league table, these will be:
- Position
- Team
- Played
- Won
- Loss
- Draw
- Goals for
- Goals against
- Goal difference
- Points

I could have gone into more detail about each team:
- Share price
- Stadium capacity
- Final position at end of previous season
- Number of trophies won
- Most expensive player etc.

But I decided that my investigation would be just as good with the basic statistics presented in the league table, and the hypothesis I have chosen enables me to stem off into other hypothesis’ which are linked to my primary hypothesis.

In total I have 74 teams to analyse, I will not be able to analyse every statistic.
Therefore I will use a stratified sample, this will enable me to pick a fair number of teams from each league which will make my sampling fair.

There are:
- 20 teams in the Premiership
- 18 teams in the Bundesliga
- 12 teams in the SPL
- 24 teams in the championship

I will use 20 teams overall, I will now work out how many teams I should take from each league.

Premiership = 20/74 x 20 = 5 Therefore I will choose 5
