“E.T” Opening 6 Minutes Essay

In the opening six minutes of E.T, Steven Spielberg has achieved to make the audience feel sorry for the central character. He managed to do this by using the technical features such as the number of shots, camera movements, camera distance and angles, sound, music and lighting.
In the whole 6 minutes of the film, there are over 50 individual shots. There are many long shots at the beginning which makes the first part seem slower and longer but towards the end it speeds up and there are shorter shots to add urgency and excitement. The edits are mostly simple cuts with some dissolves, they have probably been used because dissolve edits are used to suggest movement between interior and exterior locations.
The camera movement in the first part of the 6 minutes uses more long and slow tilts from the sky to the woods this may be because it gives a chance for the audience to take it all in and there given time to work out the unusual situation and what type of place is being shown and the surroundings. There are also many slow tracking shots showing the woods and the spaceship this suggests the Steven Spielberg wanted the audience to know that there is some sort of arrival of the aliens on earth.
The first camera distance and angles uses lots of close up shots of the branches in the woods, they also include the aliens and spaceship in the background. At the same time nothing is shown very clearly, this makes you have to work out what is happening in this part in the film and it all seems very mysterious. This part uses many close ups, it uses close ups of various objects including objects within the spaceship and objects which are outside of the spaceship. There is also another close up in the part of the film which uses close ups of various objects, both within the spaceship and outside of the spaceship. The part where ET is collecting the plants and the rabbit is next to them shows that the rabbit was not afraid of ET. This suggests that ET was not harmful and he is a non threatening creature.
The first part of the 6 minutes used a lot of one type of lighting. The lighting which was used throughout the first part was a lot of extreme low level. This type
