Chiaroscuro
An art technique used to represent the extreme contrast between dark and light, used also in black and white/silent movies
Solo Dance
Accompaniment – The Entertainer by Scott Joplin
Preparation
The stimulus for my dance is ‘Chiaroscuro’, which is a strong painting technique that clearly shows the difference between light and dark areas of tone. This was used famously by artists such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt. The technique was developed into early black and white films and silent movies, and was then more commonly known as the ‘Rembrandt technique’. I have chosen this stimulus because I liked how there were two parallel areas of creativity associated with the technique: painting and filming. This meant that I could have sections in my dance devoted to these two ideas.
The accompaniment that I have selected is a classical piano composition by Scott Joplin entitled ‘The Entertainer’. The music focuses on the silent movie element of the dance, in which is quite upbeat and jolly, and was also used as the soundtrack to famous silent movie ‘The Sting’. Also, the classical music represents the classical painting technique of fine art. The tempo of the music can be danced at various speeds, therefore allowing me to develop certain phrases with speed and dynamics, and to incorporate different dance styles (such as contemporary and balletic movement).
I am going to structure my dance in a narrative form of ABC. Section A (0secs – 53secs) represents the literal painting of a piece of art using chiaroscuro. Section B (53secs – 1min16secs) represents the contrast between light and dark and how they each affect the movement and mood. Section C (1min16secs – 1min40secs) will finalise my dance and represent silent movies and how the chiaroscuro technique was developed into technology.
Content
As previously mentioned, my dance is generally going to be of a contemporary and modern style, involving some movements from other styles (such as ballet and hip-hop/jazz). Because I have divided my dance into three sections, I have a motif for each section. My first motif is in section A (painting section) of the dance. This motif is a swooping arm movement to show the action of a paintbrush, clearly linking to my stimulus of an art technique. This is performed by a figure of eight movement with the arm, with opposition hips circling forwards. I have also included other versions of this using arm gestures that show slow
