The first time that I perform the phrase I frequently use arm and leg gestures that are quite simple yet clearly represent smooth paint strokes. As I repeated this, I added tilts of the body and neck to show that all of the limbs were ‘painting’ in fluid movements and so that there was no jerkiness or hesitance. I have done this to maximise the portrayal of my stimulus.
Between the repetitions of the phrase, I have included additional movements, which include floor work and travelling.
Movement 1) Ball change into left foot creating circular pathway. This leads into a flick of the toe, followed by rotation of left knee to turn body. This replicates the smooth motion of a brushstroke, and the flick of the toe represents the flick as the brush leaves the paper.
Movement 2) Step cross leap into a star/straddle position. Right arm sweeps over head slower than the movement of the body. The leaping movement shows the subject of the painting because it is the main focus of the movement and effectively would be the main focus of a piece of art. Because the right arm is swooping slower than the body it is as though the arm is painting the picture of the ‘body’.
Section B (53 secs - 1min16secs) This section consists of a phrase that is approx. 11 seconds in length, which I repeat to show a contrast between dark and light. I begin the section focussing on executing the movement in the character of ‘light’ therefore the movement is very dainty and fluent. I use a much slower, more elegant and almost balletic approach to extend the limbs as much as possible. I then follow this by repeating the same movement in the character of ‘dark’. As a result, the movements are executed with more power and emphasis, with a slight jazz/hip-hop style. The limbs are not extended as far and the movement is sharper and compact. I have also developed the idea of these two characters being opposite by performing the phrase in reverse when I do it for the second time, showing an idea that the two characters directly contrast.
Movement 3) Step forward on right leg and lift up left leg into kick. As left leg kicks up, jump right leg of floor and raise arms to help
