In the teaching of Mark’s gospel, it is made clear that a true disciple carries a cross. This can of course, mean a number of things. One who bears a cross can do so in different ways to others, and it may be to a different extremity. Bearing a cross is a representation of one’s faith existing even when one is at a disadvantage. Many people suffer from an illness or disability; whether this is mental or physical, it is considered to be one kind of way to carry a cross. Others suffer from poverty. Some people consider their friends or family members to be this cross, if they are unwell or in trouble. To bear this cross is symbolic of your faith. True disciples, much like Jesus, will grin and bear their inconvenience and refuse to let it affect their beliefs.
Different people respond in different ways. Many people have great faith, and will respond well to their calling as a disciple, but others may find it much harder to maintain a faith, and may even loose or abandon their beliefs. People will often respond depending on their situation in life, and how it is dealt with – Some people find it to difficult to respond with complete faith. True disciples however, will sacrifice their difficulty, and will respond fully to their call.
