one to help translate within our lesson, some of the Chinese students written work was at high level but the problem was the had no idea how to pronounce the words, there accent and how they pronounce their words phonetically cause for the language to sound very pigeon English although they may form a sentence in written work they would have great difficulties reading their work.
This taught me to make sure when I am speaking to speak slowly and clearly and enhance my pronunciations. This experience did show me the difficulties of a language barrier but there are ways to overcome this, I had to think about my body language, tone and other non-verbal forms of communication to help the students to understand, with children this is easier as they are more willing to try ad communicate and play games.
I have learnt my communication skills slightly different to most children, from the age of four I was statemented as I had a speech impediment, although I talked allot very few other than those close to me could understand what I was saying. I also had a brother seven years older than I and he would often talk for me or finish my sentences.
Throughout nursery, primary and senior school I received help and training with language, this included physically doing exercises, extra help with my curriculum, and speech therapist/ support teacher. Even when I could talk more easily I needed help with English grammar and spelling as I was behind the curriculum and I would spell phonically as to how I spoke.
One of the reasons that I communicate well is because I have patience and understanding on how important it is to listen attentively and wait for the person to finish completely what they wish to communicate without jumping in or finishing/ second guessing their sentence for them so as I enable them to communicate fully on what they want to say.
I especially take care to communicate well with disabled people as I have empathy for their situation. Although my speech impediment was a disadvantage for many years but I feel in the long run it has become an advantage as I am very familiar with the different approaches of good communication skills.
If I didn’t learn good communication skills my whole life would be different I don’t think I would have the same ambitions as I do today
