An obvious way in which an environmental health practitioner (EHP) may be involved with noise would be the control of it. Noise victims may contact an EHP to seek advice on how to deal with the issue of noise or to complain about a noise problem. Most complaints come from areas of residency however complaints can come from anywhere including worker or business owners. An EHP would become a contact for both the noise creator, after locating the source of the noise, and the complainant to try to resolve issues. They may communicate through letters, phone calls, e-mails or visits. They may also monitor the noise levels at different times over a specified duration to see how big of a problem the noise really is. If the EHP decides that the noise is a problem, and the noise creator or cause hasn’t taken advice on how to reduce the levels, they may assist in taking legal action with the sufferer and support them in resolving the case.
A second way an EHP could become involved would be to reinforce acts or regulations, which are already in place by the European Union. One act they may be enforcing is the Noise at work Act 1989. By reinforcing these acts they will educate landlords, business owners and individuals on the act and how to comply with them. The EHP may also be involved in the running of consultation sessions or informal conferences.
Another way an EHP could become involved with noise would be through the planning department, this would mainly be a role of an EHP working for local authorities. The EHP would attend planning meetings and liase with construction department to ensure noise acts are adhered to. They also ensure minimal disturbances to the areas of planning proposals to ensure there are no complains. EHP’s will check plans, offer advice and comment before building professionals can implement their projects (W.H.Bassett, 1999).
