POPULATION CONTROL
Should the government be allowed to tell people how many children they are allowed to have in order to make life ‘better’ for everyone?
Sir David Attenborough quotes “Instead of controlling the environment for the benefit of the population, maybe we should control the population to ensure the survival of our environment”(betterworld, 2007). Here Sir David wants to convey that overpopulation is a matter of concern which is to be controlled and not the environment. Here is an interesting fact which is also horrifying that the present world population is likely to double in the next 35 years, producing a population of 12 billion by the year 2020 if the same rate of growth continues. (nap, 2007).This essay will look at the topics such as why government should be allowed to tell people about family planning (effects of population growth), some facts and figures about the population growth and solution to control this population growth. Population growth was very rapid in the 20th century. In the past 100 years, it increased by almost 4 billion (nap, 2007). This essay will show that government should be allowed to advice people about family planning.
Effects of Population Growth
Firstly, expanding on the effects of overpopulation, every nation likes to achieve a high standard of living for their people, like adequate food, high literacy rate in the country and also gainful employment. But a major barrier to the achievement of this aim is the current rate of population growth. As stated above in the introduction, if the population grows at this rate it is likely to be double in next few years. Such a rapid growth which is in-proportionate to the present rate will impose a heavy load on all the efforts to improve the human welfare. Moreover, since everyone lives in an interconnected world, it is an international problem from which no one of us can escape (nap, 2008). So there is a centralize need of mankind to act and reproduce wisely. Today overpopulation is the root cause which is directly or indirectly related to the other major problems facing by us. Depletion of natural resources, water, increasing pollution, global warming, poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, health problems, economic imbalance etc. are some of these. Furthermore, in the developing countries like India, African nations and south American countries, the majority of people are dying of hunger (populationproblem,2007). Increasing Crime is also a great problem.
